We woke early and left Durango for Silverton. FINALLY! Silverton is shutting down this weekend so everything was on sale. Great time to buy those winter jackets we have been considering all week. We also put some coins on the train tracks to see what they would look like if the train ran them over. Guess what? They were completely flat. It's a kid thing.
We climbed to 10,640 feet and the kids got to play in the snow. Scottsdale is around 2300 feet. And Kaaawa HI is 9 feet. Yowsa! We scooped some fresh powder and poured real maple syrup over top to make a treat like we read about in Laura Ingels Wilder books. And you know what, it is pretty good.
We rode into Ouray, which is called the Switzerland of Colorado, and the view was pretty breathtaking. I have a ton of pictures, but as you can imagine, they pale to what is really her. As were the drops off the sides of the road with narrow shoulders. Nail bitter! We parked, paid, found some deer grazing in the grass and headed to the hot springs. It was around 1/4 mile from the RV park. It was 40* outside when we slipped into our suits and out into the pool. The pool is 98* in the main pool and 104* in the hot part. The kids loved it. There was steam rolling off all of us.
We met a really nice family. They have a daughter who is 8. Her name is Allie. She is in the 3rd grade. And guess where they live? Scottsdale Arizona! Right near the McDowell Mountain Acquatic Center where we like to go swimming back home. They have a summer home here and like to come up for the long weekends. They are getting closer and closer to pulling the plug in AZ and becoming full time residents up here. They have the same thoughts we do about Scottsdale sometimes. They came over to the bus tonight for a visit (Allie and Allie played with littlest pet shops for almost 2 hours on the floor) and we are going to hang out with them tomorrow to see the great falls. Allie (mine) is still not convinced that her and the other Allie are not somehow connected. Like long lost twins. I tried to convince her that I would have remembered something like that and if I did have twins, I would have picked two different names. She said, yea, but since you were going to give one of us away, that is how you would know her when you saw her again. Flawless logic of the 8 year old. Jay Jay is not impressed. He sulked and worked on his journal. We need another boy to pal around with.
You can believe my toosh will be in the hot springs tomorrow night.
