Our new found friends from Scottsdale have a summer home here and showed us the perimeter trail, which hugs the mountain on narrow cliffs. Got a little vertigo, I just have to say. It took us to a wonderful waterfall. We were able to see most of the town from this higher elevation. The kids lingered at the waterfall and had a huge snowball fight. We hiked down from the waterfall into town and picked apples from a tree we found along the route. Stopped and checked out the 100 year old school. Ate lunch in town at the local pizza joint. Dana (the mom) took me into the Ouray bookstore and introduced me to two local authors. One is from Telluride or at least spends a lot of time there. The book is The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, it came out in 2008. The owner of the book store said it made his personal bestseller list, so I picked up a copy and started it last night with the kids. We are already on page 95, so I would say it will likely make my bestseller list too.
The kids went home from town with their new Scottsdale friends (I couldn't believe I was watching my kids walk away with near strangers) while Jay and I went for provisions. We hiked back to the Schapf's home which turned out to be a beautiful 3000 sq foot log cabin over looking the town. We stayed for dinner and hanging around time and Jay Jay lost another TOOTH!
Big Jay and Brad (the dad) went for a dip in the hot springs while Dana and I visited while the kids played in the basement. It just a relaxing, relaxing day. I was thankful to be in a place with more space and the kids were happy to have friends. The little boy, Zach who's 5, and Jay Jay ended up making great friends after their exciting cliff hike to the waterfall and joint efforts in smashing the dads in the snowball fight.
We will see our new friends today for a hike to Box Canyon. The weather is perfect and 55-60 each day. Later this afternoon, we will head to Glenwood Springs for the night. Two nights in Ouray was wonderful. It may be on the list of cities we would consider relocating to
